Montana didn't work out so much. After 11 hours of being in the town I was informed it was 'complicated'...'bad timing'...blah blah. So I played the fool for a while. I left around 3:30 I guess and within 20 minutes of leaving I get a disturbing phone call, bad news..and while I was one that phone call a rock flew up and took a pretty large chunk out of my windshield. All of this happened within a 30 minute window. It was a bit overwhelming. I think I was laughing hysterically in between crying. There is nothing worse than wanting to have a mini breakdown and being stuck in a tiny car in the middle of literally NOWHERE...all by yourself.
I drove east on 90 through very mountainous regions. There was a storm forming to my left. I thought I was going to run right into it, but here you can see for miles and distances are very deceiving. As the sun set the storm just kept getting bigger. I watched it behind me and it was curving around to my right and in front of me. Behind me though I saw a funnel cloud drop. It looked like a little horizontal finger and then a tornado formed. I almost drove off of the road. I swear I heard sirens. I booked it!! It was very far behind me but seeing that was insane. It made me nervous about the storm it looked like I was driving into. I stopped around 10:30 or 11 in Sheridan, Wyoming because I just didn't want to chance it. It's a good thing, it finally hit a few minutes later and stormed for hours. It was exciting to see it from my room though. Great sleeping weather after an emotionally tumultuos day.
I woke up feeling slightly better, but the minute a sad song came on I had to turn it. I gassed up and have been driving through Wyoming and I just now got through driving across the ENTIRE state of South Dakota. The Badlands were beautifully but I was too far away to get a good picture. Just imagine the surface of Mars and you'll be close. South Dakota for the most part is very flat and boring. The only difference between it and Nebraska is that the clouds are so much closer because we are so high up and there are teepees at every rest stop.
I'm hitting 29 and heading south. I'm playing around with the idea of hitting the coast, maybe Miami. It's hard to tell though. I do feel better as time goes on though. I actually got a few phone calls that were explanatory which helps slightly.

As I do when I'm bored and/or need of a good laugh, I was looking around youtube for MST3K stuff, when I came across Space Mutiny - The Many Names of David Ryder:( Read more... )

Long story short, my new MP3 player included a voice recorder, and for a larf I ended up making files of the songs from The Sidehackers. Anyone who doesn't have 'em, go nuts and you're welcome :)

I'm sure most of you already know, but Mike Nelson and crew are doing Riff Trax these days. You download them from rifftrax.com and sync them with the movie. The one they did for 300 was so funny I feel out of my chair.
They decay and then fall away
into the abyss of an immortal bliss
loss of pain loss of pleasure
all is numb and nothing could be better
Piece by piece there once anointed soul
becomes part of the hell to which they are called
Piece by piece they eat there own rot
to not have to see it again is a priceless thought
once called prophets once called teachers
are these the spawns of the so called preachers
i believe in God, i believe in the Trinity
what i dont believe is what man says it is to be
so piece by piece go away
shut your mouths and let go of the stray
let them find God in there own darkened and dismissed ways
Piece by piece, you'll find your way someday
into the abyss of an immortal bliss
loss of pain loss of pleasure
all is numb and nothing could be better

Piece by Piece you take me apart
Deconstructing me with your assaults
Each word a dagger through the heart
Throughout the day you hold me at fault
but I'll keep myself together
while under heavy enemy fire
It's just another storm I'll weather
for I am the truth, you are only a liar.
Truthfully, I've never really loved you
I only ever was leading you on
you'll never regard anything I say as true
And you wish I would pick up and get gone
but it's the end of our time
what reason is there, what rhyme?
we're all going to go
so sit back and watch the show.

When I write a poem it is piece by piece
assembled in my mind.
When you read my poem it is complete
and you complain.
First it is the rhythm
then it is the spelling
lastly it is the structure.
So I remind you:
My poem doesn't need rhythm
it cannot dance
My poem doesn't need spelling
it cannot spell.
My poem doesn't need structure
no one lives within it.
Despite those facts
75 points is all I get.
I don't need to write better,
I just need a more convincing argument.

Which MST3k episode would you recommend as an instant pick-me-up when you're feeling gloomy?
So last summer I made my friend Brian sit down and watch "Manos": The Hands of Fate with me. I made him sit through the entire movie, and then proceeded to take him out for ice cream because it made him feel better and I was giggling madly the entire time. So fast forward to this summer, I get a phone call from the kid and I haven't talked to him in a while since he graduated and has been off becoming a millionaire or something. The phone call goes roughly like this.
Me: "Hello?"
Brian: "YOU ARE AN EVIL PERSON!"
Me: "...Hi Brian. Why?"
Brian: "I'm in the airport and it's here!"
Me: *decidedly confused* "What's here?"
Brian: "The music! That freaking Torgo music!"
Me: "What the heck are you talking about?!"
Brian: "I was sitting just using my computer and all of the sudden I heard the music...there's this guy behind me watching that freaking crappy movie you showed me!"
Me: "...Did you watch it with him?"
Brian: "...Yes...you're evil!" *hangs up*
I love my friends.

How did you discover Libba Bray's work?: Someone whose LJ I read at the time described it as "HP's sexy Victorian cousin" and said that Felicity kissed Gemma and licked Ann. And the members of
literarycrushes kept on mentioning Kartik.
What appeals to you about her writing?: She has a wicked sense of humor; I love the author interviews in the paperbacks. The overt feminism.
Any other books you'd recommend?: For Victorian books with awesome girls see The Ruby in the Smoke, Boston Jane, and Beyond the Western Sea. The best book I've ever read is At Swim, Two Boys. The Razor's Edge is very interesting.
I'm making a post about AGATB for
smallfandomfest. Are there any off-LJ fansites or forums that I should mention?

It's kind of amazing how much you miss on the internet in just one day. I'm still trying to catch up.
Yesterday was pretty fun. We spent most of the time on the beach. There's not really much to say about that- typical beach activities. But also, very entertaining, was the extremely drunk guy. He couldn't even stand up; he kept falling over. For a while there, we were afraid he was going to drown himself. He was kneeling in the water with the top of his head resting on the sand- so every time a wave came, his head would go under. And he wasn't moving at all. Eventually, one of his friends came and pulled him out. So then he ran and fell over, and went back to the same kneeling position. And since his head was wet, all of his hair got covered in sand. Then he collapsed, covering the rest of his body in sand. After that, he just layed there in a very awkward position-kind of leaning on his elbow, but twisted strangely. He stayed that way until we left. It was very funny.
We went to the traditional 5&10. We always go there, I'm not sure why. I bought a new puzzle. *cough*nerdfighter*cough*
Lastly, we went to the bay and watched the sunset. I got a few good pictures, I'll try to post them later.
On an unrelated note: I'm going to start rereading Catcher in the Rye for the Blurbing Book Club. I wasn't planning to since I read it earlier this year, but because John is going into depth with it, I figure I should so I can get more out of the discussion.

Hi, everyone! I was thinking, with all the new usernames around, we could have another "Good and Beautiful" show and tell.
To refresh the confused and/or new folks' memories, during the Phantom Planet episode, one of the characters delivered this... memorable speech:
You know, Captain, every year of my life I grow more and more convinced that the wisest and the best is to fix our attention on the good and the beautiful. If you just take the time to look at it.
This inspired Mike and Servo to create their own combinations of goodness and beauty to try to come up with the best representatives of both. Their offerings:
A Nut Goody/Anna Nicole Smith (rejected)
A Nut Goody/Tawny Kitaen (rejected)
A plate of sauerbraten/Tawny Kitaen (accepted, beautiful and substantial)
Under the cut are my personal representatives of the good and the beautiful. If anyone would like to play along, feel free to share in the comments. And remember, ladies and gentlemen, please respect the selections of others, okay? Don't be bad and unbeautiful.
( Permission to speak in flowery prose, sir. )

Hey guys, just thought I would post to let you all know (if you don't already) that it seems that the L word is going to do a spin-off after their final season...http://grrlplanet.com/2008/07/2 3/showtime-confirms-word-spinoff-works/

I am a writer.
I create stories and tell them to other people. With my words, I create universes, people, and situations that could never exist, but for a moment, however brief or however long, I make the reader believe that the world exists. He or she throws themself wholly into the experience and truly appreciate the literature.
Sometimes, it's not so easy. The ideas come in jumbled little bits, and I have to string them together, piece by piece. But when I read what I have done, and look out the corner of my eye in the bookstore to see the teenage girl reading with wide eyes, her lips moving furiously with the words I have written, I know that the pressure, the agony, and the endless nights without sleep are worth it. When I see the college-bound boy pick up a copy off the shelf, read the back, and smile widely to himself before tucking the book under his arm, I know that hauling myself in my office, loosing ten pounds for going without a lot of food for six months, and making my husband look after the kids as I slave away on the computer is all worth it.
Just think. I get to do it all over again before my next deadline.
